The sole purpose of this site is to make your shopping experience enjoyable and to make listing and selling an item or product as easy as possible. There are so many places out there where you can list an item for sale but how easy is it for you to actually sell that item and make money? I didn’t realize this until I recently listed something for sale on facebook marketplace.
Over the years, I noticed that when I would place a classified ad on craigslist or facebook marketplace, people would spend more time wanting to chat, asking questions and so on. The messaging would go back and forth and I would leave my number for them to call. Sometimes they would show up and sometimes they wouldn’t but now…it’s really a waste of time.
I didn’t realize how bad things were until I recently listed a vehicle on facebook. I told people to just call me because I don’t text plus you can answer their questions on the phone but no, I would receive 50 plus messages a day. I don’t mind answering questions or texting back but most of those messages were just idiotic and a lot of the people wanted the seller to cater to them. They were under the impression that I owned amazon and would deliver the vehicle to their door. If they didn’t approve of the vehicle, I would have to pick it up, refund their money and get them a gift certificate.
You try to justify your wasted time by getting into the mindset of “I will have to deal with it because it’s part of the game” but it’s not. Over the past year, I’ve talked to countless people with similar stories and we are all in agreement.
The final straw was when I had eight people interested in the vehicle, I constantly texted back and forth with them and they wanted to look at the vehicle. They had the money and it was burning a hole in their pocket. I told them that I had it stored and I would have to drive 40 minutes away to meet them. That morning I had texts saying, “Are we still on for 11.” Long story short, two hours later and everyone was a no show.
Lesson learned so I rewrote my facebook marketplace classified ad and I told people the way it is and here are the rules. Here is my number, call me, I’m not responding to texts or messages and you can keep your thumbs up. If you want to know if a 40 year old vintage vehicle has any rust, come and look at it, I’m guessing it does but you will never know if you don’t make the trip. Lastly, don’t be lazy, don’t send messages saying, “if you sell it let me know” this is not how things work.
I was a little rougher in the ad but none the less, I had a 4 or 5 serious calls. We set up a day and time and only two people showed up and both of them wanted the vehicle and they had cash money. We decided on who got the vehicle with a coin toss.
People have grown accustom to viewing something online with multiple images, ordering it and if they don’t like it, they send it back. This happens if you’re ordering a new product or even a used or refurbished product at amazon and I completely understand that but this mindset shouldn’t be the norm when applied to used items.
Places like ebay and others, you have to rely on great pictures and other factors but the fact remains, if you can get someone to physically look at the listed item, that’s a plus and better than any pictures.
Getting the buyer to physically look at the item for sale is the key and this is not going to happen with social media. Figure out and write down how much wasted time you spend responding to messages, looking at things related to your ad or post, back and forth texting and everything. Those minutes really add up. Wasted time and the item is still for sale. This is not the way to make money.
Don’t get me wrong, you can still have your list of buyers from across the US and some internationally because sometimes things just don’t sell locally. It could be that the local market is bad or the niche isn’t right or that there’s not really a demand locally but you should always try to sell local first and physically show the item.
This is why you have to look back 30 plus years when it comes to selling. You placed an ad in the newspaper with a small blurry photo, left a phone number and when someone called you up, you set up a time for them to look at the item for sale. Very little time was spent on the phone and they made up their mind when they physically set eyes on the item. Understanding this will help you make money.
Most websites that have all of the bells and whistles are just noise. These sites include facebook and instagram postings, links to websites, social media here, links to there, discussing this and that, this is all noise that doesn’t bring any serious buyers out to look at your items for sale. It’s also wasted time you’ll never get back.
There are no bells and whistles on this site, it’s simple and straightforward and a lot went into removing all of those bells and whistles because simple and straightforward works. This website is here to help you make money and to make your shopping experience trouble free.
